20 missiles hit South Beirut in two minutes

Israeli warplanes pounded south Beirut with at least 20 missiles in a two-minute period yesterday, minutes after the Israeli government approved a UN cease-fire plan that was to go into effect 17 hours later. An Associated Press photographer who reached the scene of the destruction said he saw the body of one child being removed from the wreckage of the residential neighbourhood of medium-rise apartment buildings. He said Israeli jets were still in the air overhead.
